Every July, communities across the country recognize Juvenile Arthritis (JA) Awareness Month to shine a light on the children and families living with this condition. The goal is to raise awareness that arthritis is not only an adult disease. Children can develop it too, sometimes as early as infancy.
What Is Juvenile Arthritis?
Juvenile arthritis (JA) is an umbrella term used to describe several types of arthritis and related autoimmune or inflammatory conditions that develop in children under the age of 16. The most common form is juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). "Idiopathic" means the exact cause is unknown.
In juvenile idiopathic arthritis, the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissues, particularly the joints, causing chronic inflammation. If left untreated, persistent inflammation can lead to joint damage, impaired growth, vision problems, and other complications.
Who Is Affected?
Juvenile arthritis affects about 1 in every 1,000 children and can occur in infants, children, and teenagers of all races and ethnic backgrounds. Although anyone can develop the condition, certain forms are more common in girls than boys. Some forms can affect the eyes or other parts of the body, and the severity can vary widely. Children may experience mild symptoms with only a few joints involved, or they may develop more persistent, widespread disease requiring long-term treatment.
What Causes Juvenile Arthritis?
The exact cause of juvenile idiopathic arthritis remains unknown. Researchers believe it develops from a combination of genetic susceptibility and environmental triggers that cause the immune system to malfunction. Instead of protecting the body from infection, the immune system attacks healthy joint tissue, resulting in chronic inflammation. Juvenile arthritis is not contagious, and it is not caused by injury, poor diet, or physical activity.
Risk Factors
Although the precise cause is unknown, several factors may increase the likelihood of developing juvenile arthritis:
Family history of autoimmune diseases
Certain inherited genetic markers
Female sex (for several subtypes of JIA)
Age, as different subtypes tend to occur during specific childhood age groups
Environmental factors may trigger an abnormal immune response in genetically susceptible children
Common Signs and Symptoms
Symptoms can vary depending on the type of juvenile arthritis and may fluctuate over time.
Common signs and symptoms include:
Joint pain
Joint swelling
Joint stiffness, especially in the morning
Warm or tender joints
Limping, particularly after waking up
Fatigue
Fever
Skin rash
Swollen lymph nodes
Decreased physical activity
Eye inflammation (uveitis) or blurred vision
Inflammation of the membranes surrounding the heart (pericarditis) or lungs (pleuritis)
Growth problems or weight loss if inflammation is prolonged
How Is Juvenile Arthritis Diagnosed?
There is no single test that confirms juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Diagnosis involves a comprehensive evaluation by a healthcare provider, often including a pediatric rheumatologist. The evaluation may include:
Detailed medical history
Physical examination
Assessment of symptoms lasting at least six weeks
Blood tests to evaluate inflammation and autoimmune markers
Imaging studies such as X-rays, ultrasound, or MRI to assess joint inflammation and damage
Eye examinations to screen for uveitis, even when no eye symptoms are present
Because several other conditions can mimic juvenile arthritis, healthcare providers work to rule out infections, injuries, and other autoimmune diseases before making the diagnosis.
Treatment Options
Although there is currently no cure for juvenile idiopathic arthritis, effective treatments can control inflammation, relieve symptoms, protect joints, and help children remain active.
Treatment plans are individualized and may include:
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to reduce pain and inflammation
Disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), such as methotrexate
Biologic medications that target specific parts of the immune system
Corticosteroids for short-term control of severe inflammation
Physical therapy to improve strength, flexibility, and joint function
Occupational therapy to support daily activities
Regular exercise and physical activity as recommended by healthcare providers
Routine eye examinations to detect and treat uveitis early
Ongoing monitoring by a pediatric rheumatology team
Why Awareness Matters
Living with juvenile arthritis involves more than managing joint pain. Children may face physical limitations, frequent medical appointments, medication side effects, emotional challenges, and disruptions to school and social activities. Raising awareness helps improve understanding, reduces misconceptions, encourages earlier diagnosis, and supports continued research into better treatments and, ultimately, a cure. Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Month is more than a calendar observance—it is a chance to advocate for children living with pain that others may not see.
